IC INFORMATION
Character name: Kotani Asari
Age: 16
Birth date: March 28
Grade: Junior; 11th grade
Family: Father, mother, older brother
Is your character an only child, eldest, middle, or youngest? Youngest. There is a five year gap in between her and her brother, and although he does still have a room at his parents house, he is hardly there, since he is currently in his last year of university.
Who is your character closest to, among her immediate family? Asari is closest to her brother; even when they were younger, there was rarely any fighting or arguing between them, and she felt he was often the only one in the family who could understand her. He was the one who introduced her to tennis, when she was younger (he wasn't as serious about the game as she came to be). With him not being home as often anymore, things are slightly different, but she's grown accustomed to it and often talks to him online or on the phone. And although she is not as close to her parents as she is to her brother, there is still a good relationship between her and her parents.
What type of a neighbor did your character grow up in? Lives in now? Asari still lives in the house she was born in, a two story house with four bedrooms, in a quiet cul-de-sac. There are mostly families on her street, with a few older couples who have lived in the area all their lives. Asari knows and likes most of her neighbors.
On a Saturday night what would your character be found doing? Or, if given a stretch of free time unexpectedly, what would they be doing? If given a stretch of free time, depending on the time of day it happened, Asari would either be found playing a game of tennis, or taking a trip to Tokyo. On a Saturday night, she'd try to not be home - she would probably be out with friends, finding somewhere new nearby that she hadn't yet visited. She likes exploration, traveling, and any time she could spend doing such things would be more enjoyable than time spent in doors.
How does your character deal with boredom? Asari doesn't get bored; she refuses to let herself do so. If given time in which to do nothing, she'll enjoy it just as much as if she'd been doing something. Relaxation can be fun. But on the rare times where she does feel boredom starting, she'll find something to do - from completing that homework she had left to playing a video game to reading.
Name a few of their goals: Asari mostly wants to travel. Life is too short just to stay in one place, and she is assuming that once she's older, she'll have to settle down, so she wants to take advantage of it while she can. And she wants to be a pro tennis player. For immediate goals - she wants to improve her serve, figure out if she can convince her family to go to China for a few weeks during summer, or, if not, which of her friends would be the most likely to go to an onsen with her for a weekend.
What other interests do they indulge in, beyond tennis? Asari likes to explore, the most. She'll often take a trip into Tokyo, just to explore various neighborhoods, and never, ever minds getting lost. She's always found her way home, and that's the important thing, really. Beyond that, if stuck at home, she likes board games, reading, the computer, music - her brother, once again, got her hooked on classical piano music and she plays a little. She's trying to learn a couple of languages - Chinese and French, for now. Most of her interest is devoted to tennis.
How does your character do in school? She does very well, excels in most of her classes, and hands in all assigned work promptly. Maybe not one of the top students, she has good enough grades to get her into a good university, which her parents want for her.
What is their attitude towards school and schoolwork? She thinks school is enjoyable enough, although she'd rather be doing something else. Most of the schoolwork is stupid, though; anything beyond the tests and essays, she dislikes, even if she does turn them in.
What are their favorite subjects? Worst? Her best subject is history, and science. Her worst is English. She has no absolute favorite, though.
Why did they start playing tennis? When she was five; her brother decided he was going to play, and convinced their parents to give Asari a racket as well, so he would have someone to play with. He lasted for two years, before deciding something else would be more enjoyable than tennis, and by that time Asari was hooked.
How do they rate their own skill level right now? She would say she is an excellent player. One of the top tier in the nation - when compared to the girls of course. She's not sure about the boys, although she'd like to play some of them - especially top players such as the ones Rikkai's boys team has - one day, just to see where she is.
What is their opinion of the boy's tennis team? She's torn between not caring and disliking them. Most of the time, she doesn't even pay attention to the boys team, refuses to be bothered by the implications that they are better. But there are times when it's too hard to ignore, and she can't let the fact that they are better than the girls team go.
Is your character on the tennis team? Yes
If yes, do they prefer singles or doubles? If no, what is her connection to the tennis team? Asari is a flexible player. she prefers singles, but will play doubles if it is necessary, in order to help the team.
Would your character be interested in position of captain? Yes.
Give a brief description of their appearance, or find a model/actress/singer/etc that represents your character. One, two.
Any body modifications (including hair dye): Ears pierced, twice on each lobe.
Any body modifications they wish to get: None that she can think of for now.
Typical clothes worn around the house: If she's just going to be around the house, seeing no one, she'll wear comfortable lounge pants and a nicely fitted shirt, during the summer; thicker clothes during the winter. If she's home, she likes to be comfortable.
What she would be seen in, outside of school uniform: Asari rarely dresses up to impress anyone, especially at this point in her life. She's most often seen wearing casual, cute jeans and cute tops. If she feels like being girly, which happens from time to time, she'll wear a sundress and sandals. But it's rarely.
What is her biggest weakness when it comes to foods? She likes sweet, fruity things the most. Anything super sweet, with some fruit in it - such as strawberry shortcake or fruit tortes - she can't resist.
Would she be willing to try different types of food? Always. Although she doesn't like spicy foods, she's up for new adventures, all the time. It's probably not a good thing, since her friends could easily get her to try anything once, even some very odd looking items.
WRITING SAMPLES
Tell us one story from your character that a new acquaintance or friend never fails to be told:
I got lost in my own neighborhood once. I was a street away from my house, but it was growing dark and I couldn't spot anything that looked familiar. The street was gloomy, creepy and full of monsters, at least to me.
I was eight at the time, by the way.
There was this giant oak tree in one of the houses on the street, bare of any leaves, since it was early spring, and with the setting sun behind it, it just looked so scary to me, that I didn't want to walk past it, so I stayed on the other side of the street. Really, I didn't even need to walk past it, because I'd gotten all turned around and my house wasn't even in the direction of the tree, but I was convinced I had to face down that horrible monster of a tree before I could get home.
The wind had been blowing all morning, only to settle down in the late afternoon, and I thought I was safe at the time. But such was not my luck; the wind picked up a little bit later, while I was still pumping myself up to march across the street and walk past that tree, and this big gust came blowing past.
My screaming then was what altered my parents to where I was. None of them let me forget it, after that.
Use one of the three settings/events to write out a short 3rd person RP tag.
Kotani tapped her fingers against the wooden surface of her desk, hand cupping her cheek as she stared outside. It had been a bad idea to put her desk right in front of the window, she decided; she was too interested in staring outside, watching the clouds pass by and the breeze pick up and scatter the cherry blossoms. Normally she wasn't this distracted - she'd learned long ago how to focus her mind and get whatever she needed to do done. But the day was too nice, the sky too blue, the birds too happy - they were all calling her to escape her room, with its decorated but enclosing walls, and find her wings.
It would be a perfect day for tennis. Or to go to the beach, perhaps. Or even buy a train ticket to some random place, and get lost and then find her way again, among the streets of a city.
But no. There was an essay awaiting her attention, that she needed to finish before she went off to do something else, something more enjoyable. Kotani glanced at the paper beneath her elbow, detailing the requirements for the essay, and then to the computer situated to her left, and sighed. The cursor was blinking, halfway down the page, calling her to type. She had everything she needed to finish it up but she simply didn't want to.
Hoping someone would call, or something would come up, to give her an excuse to flee her bedroom and the essay and everything else, she turned to the computer once again.
Might as well finish it.
